iPhone Duo Review 2026: Is the $1,999 Foldable iPhone Worth It?

Apple waited seven years after the first Galaxy Fold to ship a foldable, and the iPhone Duo reads exactly like a company that watched everyone else make mistakes first. It's IP68 rated, which Samsung still isn't. It uses a titanium hinge. It runs the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro instead of a cut-down part. And it costs $1,999, which is $100 more than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and $800 more than the phone most people should buy instead.

Our verdict: the iPhone Duo is the best foldable for people already living in Apple's ecosystem, and still the wrong iPhone for most buyers. If you read, edit documents, watch video or juggle two apps on your phone every day, the 7.6-inch inner screen is a real upgrade. If you mostly text, scroll and shoot photos, the iPhone 18 Pro does all of that better for less money.

Preorders open October 16 and it ships October 23, so nobody has lived with one yet. This verdict is built on Apple's published specs, the hands-on coverage from the September 9 event, and how the Duo compares with the foldables that are already in people's pockets. We'll update it once long-term reviews land.

The Short Version

Buy it if you want a small tablet and an iPhone in one pocket, you already live on a Mac and iCloud, and $1,999 is not a stretch.

Skip it if photos, weight or battery matter most. Five other foldables beat it on at least one of those, and the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro beats it on all three.

Where it wins: the fastest chip in any foldable by a wide margin, and the best dust and water protection. Where it loses: it is the heaviest and thickest foldable here, and one of only two without a telephoto lens.

The Duo Against Five Rival Foldables

Apple isn't the first to make a foldable, so the fair question isn't whether the Duo is good. It's whether it's better than the five book-style foldables already on sale. On paper, the answer depends almost entirely on what you care about.

Highlighted cells mark the best in each row. The Duo wins two of them. That's the story in one table: Apple built the strongest, fastest foldable and gave up almost everything else to do it.

Price: The Duo Is the Premium Option, Not the Luxury One

At $1,999, the Duo costs $100 more than the Galaxy Z Fold8, Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Razr Fold, which all start at $1,899. It's $100 less than the Fold8 Ultra. The gap is smaller than the Apple tax usually is, and the Duo starts with 256GB, the same as its rivals. But the storage ladder climbs quickly: 512GB is $2,199, 1TB is $2,599 and 2TB is $3,199.

Speed: Not Close

This is the Duo's clearest win. It runs the same 2nm A20 Pro as the iPhone 18 Pro. In early Geekbench 6 results, the A20 Pro scored about 4,719 single-core and 12,677 multi-core. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the Samsung and Honor phones scored about 3,588 and 10,207. That puts Apple roughly 32% ahead on single-core and 24% ahead on multi-core. Google's Tensor G6 trails both by a wide margin, and the Razr Fold uses Qualcomm's step-down Snapdragon 8 Gen 5.

You'll notice the difference less in apps opening and more over time. A faster, more efficient chip ages better, and Apple supports its phones for longer than anyone except Google.

Cameras: The Duo's Weakest Category

Four of the five rivals have a dedicated zoom lens. The Duo doesn't. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold has a 5x telephoto with Google's Super Zoom up to 30x. The Fold8 Ultra, Razr Fold and Magic V6 all use 3x lenses, and the Ultra adds a 200MP main sensor. The Duo pairs a 48MP main camera with a 48MP ultra-wide and crops the main sensor for 2x.

Apple's processing is excellent, and the Duo's main camera will likely match anything here in good light. But once you zoom past 2x (portraits, stages, kids' games, wildlife), the Pixel and the Ultra will pull clearly ahead. If the camera is why you're buying, get the Pixel 11 Pro Fold.

Battery: Big Numbers Elsewhere, Unknowns at Apple

Apple doesn't publish battery capacity. It quotes up to 24 hours of mixed use and 31 hours of video on the inner screen. Google quotes "24+ hours" for the Pixel from a 4,750mAh battery, so the Duo looks competitive with Google and Samsung. The Razr Fold (6,000mAh) and Magic V6 (6,660mAh) use newer silicon-carbon cells and carry 25–40% more capacity, plus 80W charging that tops up far faster than anyone else here.

Until independent battery tests are out, call it a draw with Samsung and Google and a likely loss to Motorola.

Size and Weight: The Price of Durability

At 254 grams and 11.3mm folded, the Duo is the heaviest and thickest phone in this comparison. It's 53 grams heavier than the Fold8 and 2.5mm thicker than the Magic V6, which at 8.8mm folded is barely thicker than two iPhones. You'll feel that difference every time you put it in a pocket.

Apple's answer is durability. The Duo is IP68 with a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge. Samsung's Fold8 phones are IP48, which covers water but not dust; the Razr Fold is IP49. Only the Pixel matches Apple's rating. For a device with a moving hinge, dust protection matters more than it sounds.

Screens: Smallest in the Group

The Duo's 7.6-inch inner screen matches the standard Fold8 and is the smallest here. The Pixel and Fold8 Ultra are 8 inches, and the Razr Fold is 8.1. The cover screen is the bigger compromise: the Duo's is 5.4 inches, while the Ultra, Pixel, Razr and Honor all have normal phone-width 6.5–6.6-inch cover screens. If you plan to use it closed most of the day, that matters.

Software: Why Specs Aren't Everything

No Android foldable can give you iMessage, FaceTime, AirDrop, Handoff to a Mac or iCloud Keychain. For people who already live on Apple devices, that isn't a tiebreaker; it decides the purchase. iOS 27.1 finally gives iPhone real Split View, two Safari windows at once and saved app pairs. Samsung's multitasking is still more powerful (three apps, floating windows, a taskbar), but it's also more complicated.

Which Foldable Should You Buy?

The Verdict

The iPhone Duo is the fastest and toughest foldable you can buy, and the heaviest and least versatile camera phone in its class. Apple chose durability and performance over thinness and zoom. It's an easy recommendation for iPhone users who want a tablet in their pocket. For everyone else, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is the better all-round foldable at $100 less. Preorders open October 16. If you're unsure, wait for battery tests after launch on October 23.

FAQ

How much does the iPhone Duo cost?

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for 256GB. The 512GB model is $2,199, 1TB is $2,599 and 2TB is $3,199. That's $100 more than the Galaxy Z Fold8, Pixel 11 Pro Fold and Razr Fold, and $100 less than the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra.

Is the iPhone Duo faster than Samsung and Google foldables?

Yes, by a wide margin. In early Geekbench 6 results, the Duo's A20 Pro scored about 4,719 single-core and 12,677 multi-core, roughly 32% and 24% ahead of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the Galaxy Z Fold8. Google's Tensor G6 is slower still.

Does the iPhone Duo have a telephoto camera?

No. It has a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultra-wide, and uses a 2x crop from the main sensor. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold has a 5x telephoto, and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Razr Fold and Honor Magic V6 have 3x telephotos.

Which foldable has the best battery?

By capacity, the Honor Magic V6 (6,660mAh, not sold in the US) and Motorola Razr Fold (6,000mAh), both with 80W charging. Apple quotes up to 24 hours of mixed use for the Duo but doesn't publish capacity, so wait for independent tests before calling it.
